We are an Artist Cooperative in the community of Duluth, Minnesota, 126 miles north of the Minneapolis and St. Paul.  Built in 1911, Washington Junior High School served Duluth students until 1992, when Artspace acquired it and transformed it into an affordable live/work artists' cooperative, Artspace's first development outside the Twin Cities. In an unusual arrangement, the cooperative shares the six-story red brick building with a city-run community center that includes the school's gymnasium, pool (currently not in use), and offices.  Tenants of the Washington Studios will have use of these facilities during public-use hours.

Washington Studios occupies a prominent site in Duluth's economically challenged Central Hillside Neighborhood. Many of its units offer spectacular views of downtown Duluth, its busy harbor, and Lake Superior. The entire downtown shopping district is within easy walking distance.

In addition to the integrity of these elements, Artspace added all new appliances and windows during the restoration. The result is uniquely designed spaces that are utilitarian for artists and their families.

Washington Studios was developed by Artspace Projects, Inc., a non-profit real estate developer that is committed to long-term stability in communities and artist empowerment.
